Our View Is a Novel

Most villas sell you a pool. We sell you a lake.

Ko Lake Villa sits on Koggala Lake, overlooking direct views of Madol Duwa island and Wickramasinghe ancestral lands. Madol Duwa is not a brochure name. It is the island of Martin Wickramasinghe's Madol Duwa — the novel every Sri Lankan child reads, later a 1976 film. Two runaway boys. One mangrove island. You see it from the grass.

The boats leave from our garden. No transfer. No tuk-tuk. Off the lawn, onto the water.

Eight islands sit on this lake. Cinnamon Island — a working plot, three generations deep, bark peeled and rolled by hand. The temple island — nineteenth-century murals, Jataka tales on the walls, Sri Lanka's oldest printing press still inside. And Madol Duwa itself — mangrove paths, an old well, left wild on purpose.

Look up on the way back. Eagles work the thermals. Kingfishers drop off the posts. And at dusk, the stilt fishermen — one leg on a pole, a line in the water, a hundred yards from our deck.

Or fish it yourself. There is a sandbank directly opposite the villa. Local men have worked it for generations. Join them.

And when you want the sea, it is ten minutes on foot. A private service road runs from the villa to the beach — no main road, no traffic, no tuk-tuk. Ahangama's surf points and the quiet sand coves sit at the end of the walk.

One last thing about this water. In 1942 this quiet lake was a secret RAF flying-boat base. Catalinas landed where the fishermen now stand. A pilot took off from here, spotted the Japanese fleet, and sent the warning that may have saved Ceylon.

The airstrip is still there — cut into the shore between the lake and the sea.

Quiet lake. Loud history.
